Since my late teenage years and throughout my twenties, I’ve had relationships with men, who were a lot older than me. Often just a lustful projection, these romances usually had to be kept a secret and were characterised by an imbalance of power defined by obvious differences in our gender, social status and resources.
While none of these love stories lasted, a sense of intimacy, trust and friendship evolved. By asking my former romantic partners to go on one last holiday together, I create settings for us to revisit the past and reassess. What was the attraction and how did it fade? Which social stigmata about heterosexual relationships with big age gaps apply to us?
In Like you, I love love I look at Tomy and Adam, two of my older ex-lovers, as well as my current same-aged partner Luk, as they all look back at me. Navigating feelings of tension and shame but also of tenderness and vulnerability, I take control and approach a clearer idea as to what I was looking for in the other and what I am longing for in love.
The project consists of around 80 portraits, diptychs, polyptychs and text fragments taken from our conversation, chat archives and self-reflections from both the past and the present. The “I” and the “you” in these texts are not assigned to their protagonists, leaving space for the ambiguity and fluidity of power dynamics that characterise these relationships.
